Ever thought about writing a legal book? Tom shares his thoughts and experiences

Ever wondered what it's like to publish (or self-publish) a book?

Some of you may have seen that over the last 3 years I was writing a book called 'Success-Ion' - 101 Tips to grow your estate planning business. I worked out that I spent over 100 hours writing, re-writing and planning the book.

In reality it's a marketing book with 101 tips to grow any business as cost effectively as possible - but my audience is niche.

Why did I do it?

I wrote the book because I was on a mission to help my audience to grow their businesses and because I recognised that not everyone could afford to engage a marketing agency straight away.

In truth, I also wanted to continue to market myself using 'position of authority' marketing. - That's just me being honest...

How did I do it?

I quickly decided to self-publish. I spoke to publishers and watched hours of videos discussing the merits of both and thought that I would deal with everything cost-effectively.

I went for Kindle Direct Publishing. It provides a straight forward way to upload your manuscript and book cover etc. I followed the 'on-screen' instructions and before I knew it, I'd submitted the book for review.

It felt weird to say it was published and available. I then ordered myself an authors copy which is no different to a regular copy as far as I can see except it takes longer to arrive. I then started to advertise and market that I'd launched it and set myself a small target about how many books I'd like to sell.

Kindle Direct Publishing provides a dashboard or sales and of royalties.

How much has it made me?

I never wrote the book to become a millionaire or to become an Amazon Best Seller. I did it to help a specific audience so money wasn't the main focus but it's a SMALL byproduct. I make between £2-4 on each book and it takes about 3 months for that money to land in my account.

How do I market it?

I have used LinkedIn and our website to promote the book and then my network have kindly done the rest. They have shared it and bought copies for their team etc. I also have sold a few copies at conferences and events.

One last thing...

I am delighted about the feedback that I have received and am confident that for £9.99 you'll get a great return on investment. More importantly, I am giving ALL royalties made on the book this year to The Brompton Fountain to help them continue the amazing work they do so you'll also be supporting a great cause.

If you have bought it and found it useful, please leave a review. The more reviews, the more sales, the more money raised for The Brompton Fountain.

Over and out...
